From thunderstorms during qualifying to scorching heat during the race, Lewis Hamilton conquered the extreme conditions at the Hungaroring to emerge victorious and extend his Championship lead over rival Sebastian Vettel before the summer break. Here’s our highlights from Hungary!
Our Hungarian Grand Prix weekend began with an Exclusive Pit Lane walk, in which we were able to get very close as the teams prepared their cars for the weekend’s racing and practiced pit stops. We then hopped on the truck used for the F1® drivers’ parade for a Drive the Track Tour, as our expert guides talked us around a lap of the Hungaroring. We capped off an exciting first day at the track by inviting our guests to have their photo taken on the Main Straight with the Championship trophies awarded to drivers and teams.
After Friday’s free practice sessions, our Hero and Trophy guests joined us for Insider Access to the F1® Paddock. After having our photos taken on top of the podium, we learned more about the logistics of Formula 1® from Christian Pollhammer and met with Safety Car Driver Bernd Mayländer. We also paid a visit to the Renault garage, where Formula 2 driver Jack Aitken explained the intricacies of a Formula 1 steering wheel. Finally, we checked out the F1 Experiences two-seater garage, where some of our guests took the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of an F1 car!
Our day finished with a Paddock Club™ party, where we were joined by Williams’ Robert Kubica. The Polish driver has staged a remarkable comeback to Formula 1 after sustaining severe injuries in a rally crash seven years ago, and his Q&A with James O’Brien was full of fascinating insights. Kubica stayed around for some photos and autographs with our guests.
The Champions Club by F1® Experiences opened on Saturday morning. With an excellent location on the Main Straight near the Pit Exit, our guests enjoyed privileged race views as they sampled our trademark hospitality. They were also glad to have a roof over their head when storms hit the circuit during qualifying! We welcomed several special guests to the Champions Club throughout the day, including Indian ex-F1 driver and current TV pundit Karun Chandhok, and Sauber team young gun Charles Leclerc.
The F1 Experiences two-seater car took several passengers for an unforgettable two laps around the circuit over the course of the weekend, including our lucky guest Catriona from Scotland, who won her ride in an Instagram competition run by the Paddock Club™ on Friday. The two-seater garage was also a popular stop on our guided tours of the F1 Paddock, where we had many meetings, and even a few selfies, with top drivers.
On race day, we were joined in the Champions Club by Sean Bratches, F1®’s Managing Director of Commercial Operations, who told us more about Liberty Media’s plans for the future of the sport. Our Paddock Club™ guests also enjoyed several driver appearances on race day, including Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly.
After taking a surprise pole on Saturday in the wet, Hamilton extended his lead in this year’s World Championship with his sixth win at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen completed the podium for Ferrari, as Daniel Ricciardo completed a strong run from twelfth on the grid to fourth place for Red Bull Racing. See you after the summer break for the Belgian Grand Prix!
