2019 British Grand Prix Highlights

We’re just back from delivering an exciting experience programme to a large group of guests at the British Grand Prix, one of the busiest weekends on the 2019 Formula 1 calendar. Here’s our highlights from Silverstone, where reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton won at home for a record-breaking sixth time.

2019 British Grand Prix Guided Track Tour

Guided Track Tour, Exclusive Pit Lane Walk & Trophy Photos

Highlights of our Thursday programme at Silverstone included a Guided Track Tour with expert commentary from racing drivers who have competed at this iconic circuit and a walk down the pit lane to see final preparations being made to the cars in advance of Friday’s practice sessions. Our Starter, Premier, Hero and Trophy guests also posed for photos with the Championship trophies awarded to drivers and teams – Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft even made a surprise appearance to photobomb some of our guests’ photos!

Paddock Club Reception Lando Norris

Paddock Club Reception

As the first day of track action concluded, our traditional Friday night activities kicked off with a Paddock Club Reception featuring a very special guest, Lando Norris. The 19-year-old, who has had a very promising start to his F1 career this year with McLaren, talked about his path to Formula 1 in front of a very appreciative audience of Hero and Trophy guests. Norris also talked about his experience in the recent Austrian Grand Prix, where he led 5-time Champion Lewis Hamilton in the opening laps, and finished his appearance by posing for a group selfie with our guests.

F1 Insider Access-1

Friday night also means F1 Insider Access! The garage doors stayed open up and down the pit lane for our Hero and Trophy guests to get closer to Formula 1. In addition to getting up close to all the cars as they were taken to be weighed, we also learned more from guest presenters including ex-driver Ricardo Teixeira, Virtual Statsman Sean Kelly and Sam Power, who presented in front of the Alfa Romeo Garage. Our guests also met Safety Car Driver Bernd Mayländer and got to pose for a photograph on the iconic Silverstone podium.

Champions Club and Paddock Club guests were also taken on an exclusive guided tour of the very busy Formula 1 Paddock at Silverstone, where they interacted with current and legendary F1 drivers, team bosses and celebrities. Some of the biggest names spotted in the Paddock over the weekend included Star Wars creator George Lucas, Daniel ‘James Bond’ Craig, ex-Manchester United manager José Mourinho and The Black Eyed Peas. One of our own guests was a Paddock Celebrity himself during his tour, thanks to his unique Union Jack suit, which he got signed by Jackie Stewart, Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, George Russell, Damon Hill and Guenther Steiner, among others! We also took one of our young Hero guests, Jared, into the Paddock where he met his hero Lewis Hamilton, as well as several other big name drivers.

Jenson Button in the Champions Club

Zak Brown & Jenson Button in the Champions Club

The Champions Club by F1 Experiences welcomed guests to the top floor of the UTC building on the National Pits Straight on Saturday and Sunday. With sweeping trackside views from the rooftop terrace and plenty of TV screens in the indoor suite, our guests had the best of both worlds as they enjoyed all-day hospitality and an open bar.

On Saturday, McLaren boss Zak Brown made a special guest appearance to talk about the excellent progress made by the British team this year, including their exciting driver lineup of Carlos Sainz. Jr and Lando Norris – both of whom have recently been confirmed to drive for the team again in 2020. On race day, 2009 World Champion Jenson Button made a special appearance. In a wide-ranging chat with F1 Experiences’ James O’Brien, the Brit touched on the importance of retaining Silverstone on the Formula 1 calendar, his experience behind the wheel of his Championship-winning Brawn car earlier in the weekend and his impending fatherhood!

Lewis Hamilton 2019 British GP

Hamilton the Record Breaker

Beaten to pole by his teammate Valtteri Bottas by just six thousandths of a second, Lewis Hamilton had his work cut out from the start of the race after the Finn led off the line. After surviving an early challenge from Hamilton, Bottas was controlling the race until a Safety Car period played into the Brit’s hands.

The 5-time World Champion took the lead of the race and never looked back as a series of spirited battles took place behind him, notably between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. After dispatching the young Ferrari driver, Verstappen set his sights on the final podium spot occupied by the other Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel. The Red Bull driver soon made it past the German, before Vettel misjudged his braking and made heavy contact with Verstappen. Incredibly, both drivers managed to finish the race, Verstappen in 5th and Vettel in a lowly 16th.

Hamilton’s sixth win on home soil at Silverstone also made him the most successful driver in the British Grand Prix. He’s also taken a commanding 100-point lead over Sebastian Vettel in the driver’s championship as the 2019 Formula 1 season reaches the half way mark.
